Cascade Lakes - July 10th, 2008
RECORDED:    90 °    FISHING: Excellent

The weather is now hot and the fishing is too.  The difficult decisions lie in where to go fishing...

First, Choose what you want to target....Bass or Trout.

Second, Choose how you want to go after them.

Answering those two questions will help one decide WHERE to go fishing.

Quick help guide:

For Bass on the fly, popper or sub surface, hit Davis.

For Trout on dries, Fish the Callibaetis Hatch at East or Hosmer or Fish the Upper Deschutes with any dry pattern.

For Kokanee on the fly, Hit East with Callibaetis nymphs or chironomids as well as Crane Prairie.

For ENORMOUS Rainbows,  Need you really ask???

Great Fishing!!!

RECORDED:    77 °    FISHING: Excellent
FISHING SEASON is in FULL swing right now.   Its simply a matter of choices, choices, choices...and that can pose a problem with limited fishing time.  Dry Fly entusiasts should focus on the Upper Deschutes, East and Hosmer.  Callibaetis are around in numbers.  Beware of the biting bugs on the Upper D stretch.  Wickiup and Paulinas Browns are always eager to engulf innocent bystanders.  Crane continues to be Crane, producing Rainbows the dimensions most never thought existed.  The Bass in Davis are willing slammers of flies raked across the surface.

This is Central Oregon Fishing...Get out there and enjoy it!!!!

The season is certainly underway!!!  The fishing is definitely improving as the weather cooperates and warms.  Midges, as well as some callibaetis, are keeping the Rainbows occupied with eating.  Scuds can also be a good choice in ones arsenal.  Browns are prowling shorelines looking for innocent unsuspecting finned appetizers to fill their dinner plates. Best days to be on the water will be those days the wind isn't creating white caps.  The fishing will continue to get better as we move into June.  Thank you Lord for allowing us to work smack dab in the middle of stillwater paradise.

Fall is Here!!!  Cold nights and Cool mornings are a reminder that Old man Winter is not far off.  When ice freezes the line in your guides, you know that it's a tad bit on the cool side.  Regardless, Fall fishing can be a beautiful time to experience Central Oregon.  The air is crisp, the leaves are full of color and the fish are looking for that last chance to grab a meal before winter sets in.  If you get the chance in the next few weeks, take some time to get out and experience Central Oregon's Magnificent Beauty!!!

RECORDED:    70 °    FISHING: Great
The warmer weather has definitely spurred on the bug hatches.  The Rainbows have now started milling around looking for food.  Although the callibaetis aren't really going yet, the midges are out in full force.  Many of the lakes are experiencing great hatches of midges and the Rainbows are keying in on them.  Expect the Callibaetis to start showing up in good numbers in the coming weeks on our lower elevation waters.  Ah yes, Trout fishing season has finally kicked in on the Cascades!!

BASS

Crane and Davis continue to be the hot spots for Bass fishing!!!  This unseasonably HOT weather has gotten the Bass ready for the Spawn which should be happening pretty soon.   At Crane this week, we had more than a few Big Sowbellys follow their potential male suitors to the boat.  Davis continues to produce some REALLY BIG Northern Strain Largemouths.  Its truly incredible to see the avg size of those fish.  However, the fishing is getting tougher to be sure.  Water has cleared and Bass tend to get very jittery in shallow clear water.

TROUT

The trout fishing hasn't really gotten fully in gear yet.  East and Lava lakes are now ice free and accessable.   East is likely a better bet than Lava right now but Lava will catch up once the water warms a tad and the bug activity picks up.  Although we have landed Rainbows on Crane already this year, it needs a little more time too to kick into high gear for the Rainbows.  A week or so more of this Hot weather will definitely jumpstart the Rainbows into feeding with reckless abandon!!!

DAVIS LAKE...The GOOD, the BAD and the UGLY:

The GOOD--Bass fishing for 3-6LB+ Bucketmouths had been as good as one could wish the last few weeks.

The BAD--The Bass fishing has slowed dramatically from its torrid pace.  The easy Spring fishing is past.  The Bass fishing pressure has been rather heavy and many., many Bass have been hauled out of the lake in the last month.  A few weeks ago, 20-40+ Bass days were common.  Now you may have to work hard to land a dozen.

The UGLY--Haven't seen many trout.  Hoping for the best but it doesn't appear that a decent trout population remains.  It is highly  likely that the lake will need to be restocked with larger trout in order for it to become a viable trout fishery again.  On a positive note, it looks like the Bass have gone through the chub population rather dramatically just like they did in Crane.  This would bode well for a healthy survival rate when trout were reintroduced in the lake as long as they were stocked at a minimum 6-8 inch size to escape Bass predation and the lake retained enough water for the trout to escape throughout  the whole lake. With a combination of larger trout restocking and enough water, Davis Trophy Trout fishery should return quickly!!

IMPORTANT Reminder:  Davis is  FLY FISHING ONLY!!!  Kindly remind anyone that may not be following the rules.

RECORDED:    65 °    FISHING: Fair
Most of these lakes are still inacessable.  Timing is everything in life.  If you can hit a lake within a few days of ice-off, the fishing could be incredible especially for the Brookies.   They will be very hungry and eager to chase down your fly!!  The warmer weather coming this week will improve the thawing process on our lakes.
